An informal letter is a casual letter written to someone whom you are relatively close to.

  • How are you and Uncle John

From the bottom of my heart

    I figured

    Do not worry

    Send my regards

    I miss you dearly

As you would know by now

    Take good care of yourself

  • Write ‘25 February 2023’ and not ‘25th February 2023’, ‘25-2-23’ or ‘25/2/23’

You are advised to write between 250 and 350 words for this section. You should look at the printout of a flyer on the next page, study the information carefully, and plan your answer before beginning to write.

Your best friend’s father, who is not in Singapore, wishes to throw a surprise birthday party for his son. He has seen a flyer recommending various venues to hold parties. He wants to hold the surprise birthday party at a venue where all his son’s classmates can enjoy themselves.

Write a letter to your best friend’s father suggesting:

  • Two venues shown in the flyer at which the classmates of your best friend will enjoy celebrating

  • Two venues other than those shown in the flyer that may interest your best friend’s father

  • Why you think that the party should be held at one of the venues you have chosen

Write your letter in clear, accurate English, and in a jovial, enthusiastic tone which will show your best friend’s father how excited you are about this impending party.

You should use your own words as much as possible.

Paragraph 1: State your decision

Paragraph 2: Explain the reason for your decision

Paragraph 3: Explain in detail the reason(s) for your decision

Paragraph 4: Suggest two other options

Paragraph 5: Explain the reason for suggesting one option

Paragraph 6: Explain the reason for suggesting the other option

Paragraph 7: Summarise all the reasons for your decision and suggestions

Dear Uncle Lee,

Thank you for entrusting me with the task of choosing a birthday party venue for your son, Tommy. As his best friend since primary school and good friends with his classmates, I feel confident that Tommy and his classmates will prefer to have the party in either Daisy Karaoke Room or Sugar Bakery.

Tommy has many classmates who are close to him. Hence, he will be able to invite more guests to these venues that can accommodate more people.

Tommy also enjoys singing and baking, hence he will be kept entertained in both venues. While Daisy Karaoke Room provides snacks and drinks, I personally believe that the opportunity to bake his own birthday cake at Sugar Bakery will result in a memorable birthday for Tommy.

Besides those venues, I would like to suggest the Singapore Zoo and the Tulip Country Club as other possible venues for your consideration.

I understand Tommy is a big animal lover and will be thrilled to hold his birthday party at the Tiger Restaurant at the zoo as well. The capacity of the restaurant is big and therefore he will have the luxury of inviting friends and family members to celebrate this special day together. I am sure that Tommy will also be thrilled by the animal performances.

As for Tulip Country Club, Tommy has been talking about it recently. He is intrigued by the paint gun and archery games and will definitely enjoy a part in one of the restaurants, followed by a paint gun and archery competition with his classmates.

To conclude, I believe that the party should be held in one of the venues mentioned above. As one of Tommy’s friends and classmates, I am excited to attend the party in any of these venues and look forward to hearing your decision.

Yours sincerely,

Analina Tan
