The Conclusion

A conclusion is simply the place where you got tired of thinking. Life is the art of drawing sufficient conclusions from insufficient premises.

the Body Paragraph

Just as the introduction is key to establishing a benchmark for your essay, the conclusion is the last impression that you are leaving with readers (and examiners before they finalise your grade!).

Call to Action

For all the attempts to understand or explain the mass media's endless shocks and surprises, its influence — a sphere that covers so many others — will have been a product of the people's own perceptions. The solution is not to bemoan the mass media but to develop strategies of self-control, as we do with every other vice in life. As that happens, more and more people will become, in a sense for the first time, citizens of a global world.

Future Possibilities

The beauty of mass media's influence is that, unlike ingrained hatred, it is malleable. It shifts rapidly; with the right pressure from the right people, it can shift back. But the people’s response, crucially, must be open-minded, and it must come from readers and listeners across the broad spectrum. Otherwise, mediums of mass media we think of as socially stable may prove to be far more insidious than we’d like to believe.

Interesting Analysis

The 21st century is a moment that is less a referendum on the mass media's influence on the people's perceptions, than it is a snapshot of messy change in progress. In fact, mass media has gone beyond merely influencing the way people perceive reality — in today’s hyperconnected, hyperconscious world, mass media has become reality.

Opinion + Hope/Despair

A word, then, for the special influence of the mass media. The mass media has an invisible passe-partout that allows them to roam the world and spread their messages — it is an intermediary between the public and realms that are otherwise moated by power, distance, and complexity. Most of us allow our perceptions to be shaped by the structure, volume, and range of mass media’s influence. But what’s being communicated matters, too.

  • Encourage and/or rouse your reader here! While your essay should be argumentative, here you can offer suggestions for the future

  • Offer suggestions for the future or propose a world where current trends have developed and improved

Most essay prompts do not ask for suggestions (So don't include them in your body paragraphs) but you can offer some in the conclusion.

  • You want to include engaging and/or refreshing insights here

These must pertain to the issue as a whole, and provide a fresh point of view.

  • There is elegance in simplicity.

Express your personal opinion, as well as a note of hope/despair.

To what extent does the media influence our perception of reality?

To what extent does the media influence our perception of reality?

  • •To wrap up the discussion neatly and convincingly.

•And include the impactful inclusion of thoughts and implications.

  • “Candidates should ensure that equal attention is given to the concluding paragraph. It is the candidate’s ‘last word’ and, as such, it should make an impact. A number of candidates refer back to their introduction in a highly effective way, giving a sense of planning and organisation based on sustained clarity of thought and argument. This is a technique worth bearing in mind.”

  • After we break down the structure of the conclusion, we’ll dissect different examples of conclusions together with you. Rest assured you’ll be well-equipped the conclusion very soon.

Consider the view that cities are no longer places of opportunities.

In sum, cities may have once been the hammering engines of their nation’s economic progress, the museums of wealth and culture, the emblems of global fascination and aspiration. Yet, they are also deformed by racism, bled by the profiteering of the upper-class, and fouled by disease and crime. But in their brightest moments, they offer us a chance to break free from the bonds of prejudiced and limited horizons. One day perhaps, they will offer us a land of opportunity once more.

‘Workers today have never had it better.’ Is this an accurate view?

In sum, work is far from perfect, and as organisations try new modes of working, some misunderstandings are inevitable. Finding meaning, whether as an investment banker or fast-food worker, is difficult work. The heightened awareness of a career’s magical, rehabilitative properties, may just be the place to do it. What better time than today do we have to seize the magic of work?

“Prosperity is all that matters; everything else can take a backseat.” Comment.

In sum, rethinking the modern-day obsession with prosperity may very well require pushing away a modern life exercised by competitive consumption, which undergirds the incessant demand for more and more. As Kate Raworth writes, “Reversing consumerism’s financial dominance in public and private life is set to be one of the twenty-first century’s most gripping psychological dramas.”

‘It is becoming ever more necessary to place restrictions upon scientific research today.’ Do you agree?

Today, we inhabit a world of growing reliance on scientific innovation to solve our problems. While it is likely unarguable that scientific research has brought humanity to its current state of modernity and prosperity, the unprecedented rate of progress in scientific research has brought Man into unchartered territories. While staunch advocates argue that it is for the greater good of Man, it is undeniable that such advancements in scientific research today cross into grey areas that bring about ethical and moral quandaries. When coupled with the monetary incentives that increasingly drive research today, the purported altruism and even credibility of research is brought into question. As such, restrictions on scientific research are ever more necessary today to safeguard not just the credibility and legitimacy of scientific research, but more crucially the values, ethics, and welfare of the human race.
